Slipping Rib Syndrome: What It Is and How to Manage It

Slipping rib

Slipping Rib Syndrome (SRS) occurs when the lower ribs—usually ribs 8, 9, and 10—move abnormally or “slip” at the cartilage attachment to the sternum or the spine. It is more common in people with hypermobility or Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), but it can occur in anyone.

Why Slipping Rib Syndrome Happens

  • Loose ligaments or cartilage: The ligaments connecting the ribs can be overly flexible, allowing the ribs to move more than they should.

  • Trauma or repetitive motion: Sudden twists, falls, or repetitive bending can trigger rib instability.

  • Muscle imbalance: Weak core or shoulder muscles fail to stabilize the ribs.

  • Hypermobile conditions (like EDS): People with EDS have naturally stretchy connective tissue, making slipping ribs more likely.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Sharp, stabbing pain under the ribs

  • A popping, clicking, or catching sensation

  • Pain when twisting, bending, coughing, or sneezing

  • Ribs that flare outward or feel “out of place”

How Physical Therapy Helps

  • Rib stabilization exercises to reduce slipping

  • Diaphragmatic and lateral breathing to control rib flare

  • Core and shoulder blade strengthening to support the rib cage

  • Gentle mobility and posture work to prevent future flares

Other supportive strategies include kinesiology taping, rib belts, and gentle stretching.

We specialize in treatment and management of people with hypermobility spectrum disorders (EDS/hEDS).
