Physical Therapy for Hypermobility| EDS physiotherapy in Bethesda

EDS/hEDS can demonstrate a spectrum of issues like frequent joint dislocations/ subluxations or injuries, joint pain, headaches, POTS, pelvic pain, gastric issues, fibromyalgia etc.

What does physical therapy for hypermobility look like?

The primary goal of PT for someone with EDS and Hypermobility is to manage symptoms, prevent injury, and improve joint stability and muscle strength. Because the connective tissue is hyper-elastic and joints are prone to instability, strengthening surrounding muscles and improving proprioception (the body’s sense of joint position) are essential.

What to expect during your sessions ?

Key Components of treatment plan for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum disorders

Joint Protection and Stability Training

  • Strengthening muscles around hypermobile joints is critical. This must be done progressively while reinforcing body stabilization and proprioception.
  • Exercises often focus on low-impact activities (e.g., swimming, cycling, stationary biking, or gentle resistance training) to avoid placing excess strain on the joints.
  • Bracing or taping  techniques.

Proprioception and Balance Exercises

  • Many people with hypermobility have decreased proprioception, meaning they may not be able to sense joint position or movement as well as others. We use biofeedback devices to train functional foundations of the body.

Postural Training

  • People with EDS often develop poor posture due to joint instability, which can contribute to pain or lead to further complications. Postural education is essential for reducing strain on the spine and other joints.
  • Physical therapy may include posture correction, ergonomic assessments, and exercises to improve spinal alignment.
  •

Manual Therapy

  • Techniques like myofascial releases, visceral mobilization may also be used to relieve symptoms.

We also work in coordination with other healthcare providers (e.g., geneticists, rheumatologists, or pain specialists) , nutritionists to ensure a comprehensive approach to care.

Physical therapy for EDS and Hypermobility is usually an ongoing process. It may require periodic reassessment as the condition evolves and as new challenges arise. Many people with EDS/hEDS benefit from long-term or even lifelong physical therapy to manage their symptoms effectively.
